KO & Marilyn Crispell (US)

October 28th 2018 – Maskinhallen Tou Scene, Stavanger, Norway

American pianist/improviser/composer Marilyn Crispell has composed a new piece for Kitchen Orchestra. Crispell will conduct and perform with the orchestra at the piece’s premier at Maskinhallen at Tou Scene Sunday 28 October.

The piece, which has the working title «Landscapes», will contain through-composed sections – modules with overlapping motives – as well as allowing the orchestra to improvise in larger or smaller groups. Crispell has used elements from pointillism in the piece, working with superimposed rhythms, textures and dynamics.

Marilyn Crispell is an ECM artist who has composed and performed contemporary and improvised music since 1978. For ten years she was a member of the Anthony Braxton Quartet and Reggie Workman Ensemble, and has performed and recorded with, among others, Paul Motion, Gary Peacock, Raymond MacDonald, Anders Jormin and Joelle Leandre. She has received three grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts, and in 2004 was named one of New England Conservatory’s 100 most outstanding alumni of the past 100 years.
